Solitaire engagement rings feature only one gemstone, which becomes the focal point of the ring. Solitaire rings are the most popular, approximately 70% of engagement rings sold are solitaire. It is also the most classic ring setting and goes back centuries, the oldest recorded engagement ring is a diamond solitaire given by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy. Because of their brilliance and sparkle, it is mostly round brilliant diamonds that are set in solitaire. However, other gemstones with a rich color such as rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are also great center stones as the idea is to highlight the gem.

Although solitaire rings can be minimalist, not all solitaire rings are subtle. Other details such as more intricate band designs can be made to give solitaire rings more character. Normally a ‘true solitaire’ ring will not contain pavé diamonds, but more modern designs have begun to include these as well, adding a little extra sparkle to the ring while not detracting from the center stone.
