Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI, and Rare Carat vs. a Custom Jeweler: What’s the Difference?
If you’re shopping for an engagement ring, you’ve probably come across large online jewelry companies such as Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI and Rare Carat. They offer extensive selections of diamonds and engagement rings online, with many styles and options to choose from.
But how does buying an engagement ring from a large national or online jewelry company compare with having a truly custom engagement ring handcrafted by a bespoke Los Angeles jeweler?
At Peter Norman Jewelers, we’ve specialized in custom engagement rings and wedding jewelry for over 46 years. Our rings are individually made in our small Los Angeles workshop by a master craftsman. The difference is something you can see and feel when you compare the rings in person.
Handcrafted Engagement Rings vs. Production Rings
One of the biggest differences is how the ring is made.
Large jewelry companies such as Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI and Rare Carat need to offer a broad selection of engagement ring designs efficiently and consistently. At Peter Norman Jewelers, we take a very different approach.

We make our custom engagement rings one at a time.
That allows us to concentrate on the details that matter: the shape and proportion of the ring, the way the center diamond is set, the delicacy of the prongs, the quality of the pavé work, the finishing of the metal, the profile of the setting and how comfortable the ring feels on your finger.
When you compare a production engagement ring with a beautifully handcrafted ring, these small details can add up to a very noticeable difference.

Take a close look at the rings. Look at the prongs, the setting, the side profile and the finishing. Look at how the head of the ring is attached to the band.
We think the craftsmanship speaks for itself.

What Does “Custom Engagement Ring” Really Mean?
The word custom is used frequently in the jewelry business, but it doesn’t always mean the same thing.
Many large online jewelers allow customers to choose a diamond, setting, metal and other options, and some also offer custom-design services.
At Peter Norman Jewelers, custom really means custom.
If you find an engagement ring you love but want the band thinner, the center diamond set lower, the prongs more delicate or the profile completely changed, we can make those changes.
If you like the band from one ring, the setting from another and have an idea of your own, we can bring those elements together.
And if you want something completely original, we can start from scratch and design your ring together with you.
The goal isn’t to fit you into one of our designs. It’s to make the design fit you.

Our Diamonds Are Personally Sourced Too
The custom experience doesn’t stop with the setting.
Whether you’re looking for a natural mined diamond or a lab-grown diamond, we personally source diamonds for each client. We work directly with trusted diamond cutters and growers in Europe, sourcing our diamonds from the source rather than from a large online inventory.
We bring in a carefully selected group of diamonds specifically for you, based on the shape, size, proportions, color, clarity and budget you’re looking for.
A grading report tells you a lot about a diamond, but it doesn’t tell you everything.
Two diamonds with very similar specifications on paper can look surprisingly different in person. Cut, proportions, faceting, brilliance and subtle color undertones can all affect the beauty of the stone.
That’s why we don’t choose a diamond by the certificate alone. We look at the diamond. Whether lab-grown or mined, our goal is to find a beautiful diamond for your ring, not simply one that looks good on paper.
Why Work With a Local Custom Jeweler?
Buying an engagement ring is very different from buying most things online.
Diamonds need to be seen. Proportions matter. Tiny differences in shape and cut can completely change the appearance of a stone. Even two diamonds with similar grades on paper can look quite different in person. Color undertones, faceting, brilliance and the overall personality of the stone all matter.
Working with a custom jeweler in Los Angeles allows you to see diamonds in person, compare them side by side, try different settings on your hand and discuss exactly what you want with the people who will actually be making your ring.
You’re not limited to choosing from a drop-down menu.
You can ask questions. You can change things. You can be particular. We actually encourage it.
Master Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
A fine engagement ring should look beautiful from every angle, not just from the top.
Our master craftsman pays close attention to the proportions of the setting, the symmetry and delicacy of the prongs, how securely and gracefully the diamond is held, the quality of the finishing and the way the entire ring comes together.
These details are especially important with delicate engagement rings and pavé settings, where fractions of a millimeter can affect the appearance of the finished piece.
Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI and Rare Carat vs. Peter Norman Jewelers

This is where the difference between individually handcrafted jewelry and production jewelry becomes particularly visible.
Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI and Rare Carat offer convenient ways to shop for diamonds and engagement rings, particularly for customers who enjoy researching and comparing a large selection online.
Peter Norman Jewelers offers a different experience.
We are an independent Los Angeles boutique specializing in custom engagement rings, handcrafted jewelry and personal service.
Instead of simply asking which company is “better,” we suggest looking carefully at the rings themselves.
Compare the craftsmanship. Compare the prongs. Look at how the diamond is set. Look at the ring from the side and underneath. Try it on.
And look at the diamond itself—not just the certificate.
Then decide which approach is right for you.

What About Long-Distance Clients?
You don’t have to live in Los Angeles to have a Peter Norman engagement ring.
We work with clients throughout the country and can handle the custom-design process remotely while keeping the experience as personal as it is for someone sitting with us in our Los Angeles store.
You can share photographs, ideas and inspiration with us, discuss diamonds and design details directly with our team, and be involved throughout the process.
The ring is still individually made for you in our Los Angeles workshop, and the same attention goes into sourcing your diamond and creating your ring.
Personal Service Matters
One of the things we’re proudest of at Peter Norman Jewelers isn’t something we can photograph.
It’s how we treat our customers.
Our service is personal from the first conversation through the finished ring—and long after you’ve taken it home.
That’s reflected in the many wonderful reviews our customers have written about us on Google and Yelp over the years. We encourage anyone considering Peter Norman Jewelers to read them. They tell our story better than we can.
Celebrity Engagement Rings—and Rings for Everyone Else
We’ve been fortunate to create jewelry for celebrities and other well-known clients over the years.
But you don’t need to be famous to receive that level of attention.
Whether we’re making an elaborate engagement ring or a simple solitaire, every client gets the same commitment to craftsmanship and personal service. That’s an important part of being an independent jeweler. Your ring isn’t simply another order number.
Redesigning an Existing Engagement Ring
We also specialize in redesigning and resetting engagement rings.
Many clients come to us with a diamond they already own. They may love their diamond but no longer love the setting. Sometimes the ring feels dated, their personal style has changed, or they’ve inherited a family diamond they want to wear in a more contemporary way.
You don’t necessarily need a new diamond to have a completely new engagement ring.
We can preserve the stone and its sentimental value while designing a new handcrafted setting around it.

Looking for an Alternative to Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI or Rare Carat?
If you’ve been shopping for an engagement ring at Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, VRAI, Rare Carat or another large online jeweler but want something more personal, we invite you to visit Peter Norman Jewelers.
Bring us photographs of rings you like. Bring us ideas. Bring us a ring you’ve already tried on somewhere else. Or come in with absolutely no idea where to begin.
We’ll help you figure out what you love.
And because we make custom engagement rings, you’re not limited to what happens to be in our showcase.
Your engagement ring can be made specifically for your diamond, your hand and your style.
That’s the difference between choosing a ring and creating one.
