August Birthstone: Spinel

While peridot is usually thought to be the birthstone for August, spinel is considered an alternative gem. Spinel comes in a rainbow of colors, including red, purple, and blue. Because of this, August’s birthstone is often mistaken for other gemstones. The most famous of which is probably the Black Prince’s Ruby in the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain, which is not a ruby but a large red spinel. The stone is fairly hard and comes in beautiful vivid hues, making it a wonderful option for all types of jewelry. Additionally, the stone has been prized for its supposed properties that alleviate anger and bring peace.
