GIA vs IGI Lab Lab Grown Diamonds Compared

Categorized as Blog

The two primary laboratories that verify lab-grown diamonds are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

1. Gemological Institute of America (GIA):

GIA is one of the most respected and well-known gemological laboratories in the world. While they primarily certify natural diamonds, GIA also provides reports for laboratory-grown diamonds. GIA’s report verifies the diamond’s 4Cs (Carat weight, Cut, Color, and Clarity) and clearly states that the diamond is lab-grown.

2. International Gemological Institute (IGI):

IGI is another widely recognized gemological laboratory, which also certifies both natural and lab-grown diamonds. IGI’s lab-grown diamond reports include assessments of the 4Cs, as well as a statement that the diamond is laboratory-grown.

Both institutions use sophisticated equipment and techniques to analyze diamonds and ensure accurate identification and grading. It’s always recommended to buy diamonds, whether natural or lab-grown, with a certificate from a reputable gemological laboratory.

Which is more Respected?

Both the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) are well-respected within the gemological industry. However, the GIA is often regarded as the gold standard and is considered by many to be the more prestigious of the two.

This perception is largely due to the GIA’s history and its contributions to the field of gemology. The GIA was established in 1931 and has since been instrumental in developing methods and standards used globally in the diamond industry. For example, the GIA created the International Diamond Grading System and the “Four Cs” (Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat Weight) that have become the global standard for evaluating diamond quality.

From my position, having seen many thousands of GIA and IGI lab grown diamonds, a GIA lab grown diamond is reliably better than than an IGI diamond.  Clarity in particular is on average, is much high on diamonds from GIA that have the same grading as IGI.

Peter Norman,

The GIA’s grading reports are known for their strict grading practices and consistency, and a GIA certification is often considered the most reliable and authoritative. This reputation has resulted in higher consumer confidence in GIA-graded diamonds, which can sometimes command higher prices in the marketplace.

The IGI, established in 1975, is also a reliable and trusted gemological institution, especially known for its work with lab-grown diamonds and colored gemstones. In many parts of the world, especially in Europe and Asia, IGI certifications are widely accepted and respected. However, in the United States and among diamond purists, the GIA is often preferred due to its longstanding reputation.
