October Birthstones: Opal and Tourmaline

Published
Categorized as Blog

Opal is the birthstone for the month of October, and tourmaline is considered an alternative gem. Both stones come in a stunning array of colors, making them a great choice for most people. Because of this rainbow of hues, October’s birthstones have been said to possess the benefits and powers of all colored stones.

Opals are known for their flashes of color but are also beautiful without this phenomenon. While tourmalines do not have play-of-color, they can have multiple hues in one stone or be uniform in color. They are also relatively hard and suitable for everyday wear. Conversely, opals need to be worn with more care. Additionally, opals are given as a gift to commemorate 14th wedding anniversaries, and tourmalines are gifted for 8th anniversaries.
