September Birthstone: Sapphire

Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. Treasured for centuries, sapphires are often associated with royalty. Their name comes from the Greek word sappheiros, meaning blue. Though famed for having a vivid blue hue, September’s birthstone comes in every color of the rainbow except red (ruby is the red variety of corundum).

Sapphires are both hard and tough stones, making the gems ideal for use in all types of jewelry as they can handle daily wear. They are also a wonderful alternative to diamonds in engagement rings for those who are looking for something less traditional and the perfect option for the bride’s “something blue” in earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Additionally, the gem is given as a gift to commemorate both 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.
